For many, the essential elements of a great New Year include having a party atmosphere, stunning scenery to walk in, and the chance to do something different from the norm. Ta dah – welcome to the New Year’s Eve break we’re organising in the beautiful Lake District surroundings of Patterdale. Staying in a spacious Scandi-style hostel that has a large lounge area just made for a great group gathering, guests can enjoy a mix of guided walks, good food and the pick of alternative excursions – everything from alpaca walking (yes really) through to a tour of a gin distillery. In a nutshell: - Revel in the camaraderie and cheer that comes with spending four nights in the company of a large group of like-minded people. - Smile as you walk for three days through beautiful scenery – whether it’s a challenging hike up one of the peaks or sauntering along the shores of a lake. - Relax in the knowledge that all logistics, route planning and meals are being handled by the team. - Enjoy taking a break from walking and join one of the optional alternative excursions.

You’re welcome to arrive any time after 5 pm, where the Large Outdoors hosts will be there to meet you and help you immediately settle into the hostel by plying you with a hot drink and introducing you to your fellow guests.
We’ll also be running a free shuttle collection from Penrith train station. Please note, this must be booked in advance as places are limited.
Over dinner, we outline the adventures we have planned for the coming days including the walks and the excursions that have been booked (more details on the excursion options will be released in September).
We’ll be organizing several guided walks each day of differing lengths and level of challenge. The exact routes will also depend on the day’s weather but with easy access to higher peaks such as Helvellyn, Red Screes or Place Fell as well as the shores of Ullswater on our doorstep, we have plenty of choices.
For those wanting a tougher challenge and who possess winter gear such as crampons and ice axes, we’ll head high into the uppermost reaches of the Lakes.
However, those wanting an easier time of it will be just as well as catered for with some enchanting and beautiful low level walks amid the mountain scenery.
For those wanting to mix up the walking days with the opportunity to do something different, there are plenty of options on the doorstep – everything from a lake cruise, gin distillery visit through to rising to the challenge of sampling the cakes in one of the local cafés! Alternatively, you might just want to curl up on one of the sofas back at the hostel with a good book.
Enjoy a cruise on Ullswater as part of today’s walk! We’ll be walking from the door of the hostel on a gentle walk to Glenridding, from where we get the famous steamer on a half-an-hour journey to Howtown. From there we can follow the lakeside trail back to the hostel. The steamer is a great way to admire the landscape from the serenity of the lake, and you can watch out for England’s only red deer herd on the slopes of Place Fell.
Spend the morning on the most relaxing walk imaginable, talking an Alpaca for a walk around the Lingholm Estate on the shores of Derwent Water. We’ll spend an hour and a half walking the alpacas, and meet the herd. Alpacas are known for their gentle nature and world-famous softness of their wool. This is a must for anyone who wants a special experience they won’t get in more stunning surroundings! After the experience, we’ll explore the local town of Keswick and perhaps go on an amble down to the lakeshore for a fantastic view of the hills.
Please note that the Alpaca Walking excursion may involve a drive to get there. It is approximately 30 mins away from Patterdale.
There are always hot drinks on-the-go in the dining room and then at 7.30pm each evening we serve dinner and enjoy the chatter as the group relives the day’s adventures.
On New Year’s Eve, we sit down a tad later in the evening after preparing a delectable five-course feast that befits the special occasion.
By the time the cheeseboard has been passed around and the coffee has been drunk, the group invariably will be in party-mode with music and a high level of frivolity kicking in.
After breakfast, it’s time to pack up and leave the hostel, hopefully with some wonderful Lake District memories to take with you into 2019. Check out time is 10 am, and the shuttle for the train station will leave at around 10:30 am.
